Mission StatementThe Bardin-Niskala Duo promotes cultural and social awareness using music to explore the universal yet personal and deeply complex journeys of finding identity, creating a sense of belonging, and building community. Commissioning and performing the music of ALAANA, under-represented, and historically marginalized composers, the Duo provides a voice to these groups in order to highlight the inherent equal worth of all identities and communities. The Bardin-Niskala Duo:
1. Commissions ALAANA (African, Latinx, Asian, Arab, Native American), under-represented, and historically marginalized composers to write a piece for cello and piano that is based on folk or children’s song(s) of their heritage(s), or a song(s) that addresses social, historical, or political issues of the composer’s race, ethnicity, or culture 2. Asks the commissioned composers to record a short video that addresses the cultural and/or historical significance of the song(s) their piece is based on, and their own sense of racial and cultural identity, sense of belonging, and community 3. Presents concert programs with an emphasis on their commissioned pieces and/or pieces by additional ALAANA, under-represented, and historically marginalized composers, includes the composers’ videos in their programs, and amplifies the music in any way possible (recordings, distributions) 4. Brings their programs to diverse settings: concert halls, universities, K-12 schools, community organizations, and private homes; and opens up discussion with and amongst audience members on matters of race, culture, identity, and a sense of belonging to create a sense of compassion and empathy for others |
